As the population continued to grow, the old dam could no longer meet Egypt's need for more cultivable land and increases demands of electricity. With Soviet collabration, work began on the high dam in the mid-1960s and was completed in 1971. Seventeen times as much material went into its construction as was used to build the great pyramid of Cheops, and enough metal to build 17 Eiffel towers. A huge artificial lake, Lake Nasser, reaches back 550 km to Sudan.
